GRU offers $1 lightbulbs as part of energy challenge

Add compact fluorescent light bulb purchases to the Gator-Seminole rivalry.

The energy-efficient lightbulbs will be available for $1 throughout Gainesville until Tuesday as part of the yearlong energy-conservation challenge between Tallahassee and Gainesville.

Gainesville is ahead in the categories of solar panels and hot water converters, but Tallahassee is in the lead for insulation and lightbulb purchases, Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan said.

For the past year, Gainesville and Tallahassee have been comparing the amount of energy saved from the programs at the end of each business quarter, she said.

The contest ends Tuesday with the end of the fiscal year.

Hanrahan said she and Tallahassee Mayor John Marks have previously competed in similar challenges, such as voter registration.

"We've had a four-year winning streak with Tallahassee," Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan said. "We want to keep this going."

UF's Office of Sustainability and Neutral Gator are co-sponsoring the event with Gainesville Regional Utilities to distribute 50,000 lightbulbs for $1 each.

They can be purchased today at any local Publix from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. or at the Ole Miss game Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

GRU will announce the overall winner at halftime during the UF-Florida State football game Nov. 29.
