Board to choose replacement chancellor by July 1

The committee charged with finding a new chancellor to oversee Florida's 11 public universities agreed on Monday that a permanent chancellor should be found by July 1.

The Board of Governors chancellor search committee met for the first time via conference call to discuss how to replace outgoing Chancellor Mark Rosenberg, who announced his resignation last month.

The committee agreed to hire a search firm to find suitable candidates.

Sheila McDevitt, the board's chairwoman, said during the meeting that she had been talking with a university president who could possibly fill in for Rosenberg after he leaves in February, but she didn't want to release the president's name yet.

UF President Bernie Machen wrote in an e-mail that he is not being considered for the temporary job.

"I have not been asked to consider such a possibility and would decline, if asked," Machen wrote. "I already have a full-time position."

The subject of the new chancellor's salary was also brought up at Monday's meeting. Carolyn King Roberts, chairwoman of the search committee, said other states pay their chancellors a lot of money.

"We don't have that money," Roberts said.

The board's next full meeting will be Nov. 20 in Tallahassee.
