Fight with hammer starts over teardrop tattoos

A fight involving a hammer occurred Sunday after a man made a comment about another's tattoos, a Gainesville Police report stated.

William Norris Martin was sitting in front of the Publix plaza at 1212 N. Main St. when he made a comment about two teardrop tattoos on Terry Lee Grau's cheek that led to the fight, according to the report.

Martin told police Grau struck him on the left side of the face with his own hammer.

Two witnesses who had been walking with Grau said Grau repeatedly punched Martin, but neither said he witnessed the attack with the hammer, the report said.

A third witness saw the fight from a distance and called police, the report stated. An ambulance arrived to take Martin to the hospital for cuts on his face and arms.

Grau, who was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery, told police Martin approached him with the hammer and he defended himself by punching Martin.

Grau told police that he took part in the fight and was "beating the hell" out of Martin, but said he was too intoxicated to remember details, the report stated.
