A man being chased by Gainesville Police in relation to a bicycle theft ended up in the hospital early Monday.

Police chased the man, on a red and black MGX bicycle, for about a block before he rode face-first into a parked car behind the Bank of America on West University Avenue, GPD Sgt. Lisa Satcher said.

He was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and possessing a crack pipe, Satcher said.

Charges of bicycle theft were still pending, she said.

Three GPD cars gathered behind the bank as the man was strapped to a stretcher by Gainesville Fire Rescue.

"We sent a lot of units out," Satcher said.

Officer Dan Surrency said it was for good reason. About two weeks ago, he said, someone who ran from police while receiving an open container violation turned out to be in possession of a .45 Glock.

"If somebody runs, it's for a reason," Surrency said.
