Police confiscated $9,900 in cash after responding to a drug-related armed robbery in a Gainesville apartment complex early Tuesday morning.
At 1:15 a.m., one of the residents of a Campus Lodge apartment, at 2800 S.W. Williston Road, answered a knock at the door, said Gainesville Police Department spokesman Keith Kameg.
A man armed with a gun entered and herded the residents into the bathroom while he raided one of the rooms, Kameg said.
Kameg said when police arrived, UF student Matthew Romano, 22, told officials the man went straight to his dresser and took $100 worth of marijuana and $25 in cash.
When Romano's story didn't match his roommates' and police noticed that his room appeared to be ransacked, they asked if he was involved with drugs, Kameg said.
After initially denying it, Kameg said Romano told police he had been dealing drugs.
Kameg said police confiscated a shoebox filled with $9,900 in cash that they found in Romano's room.
Police did not arrest Romano because no other drugs were found in his room, but Kameg said the case would be turned over to the narcotics unit for further investigation.
