Crossword puzzles often serve UF students in the battle against lecture napping, but those who play the game for more than relief from boredom will soon get a chance to face worthy opponents.
The third annual North Florida Crossword Puzzle Tournament will be held at Savannah Grande, 301 N. Main St., on Jan. 31.
Crossword celebrity Merl Reagle, who has created puzzles for publications like the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, guest-starred on "The Simpsons" and was featured in the documentary "Wordplay," will host the competition.
"How can you keep a puzzle guy away from a puzzle competition?" Reagle asked. "It's like keeping a cat away from catnip."
Reagle, famous for his themed crosswords, will design a puzzle for the competition. He wouldn't give out any details.
The winner of the individual competition will receive paid entry to the
national crossword puzzle tournament, a flight to Brooklyn, NY., where the
event is held, and 2 nights stay at the Brooklyn Marriot.
Registration for the event ends January 29, but walk-ins will be accepted if space is available.
