Sen. Mark McShera will run for Student Body president after the Orange and Blue Party nominated him Saturday.

McShera, who represents students in UF's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, said running on the executive ticket is an exciting opportunity and hopes to broaden the work of SG to reach the majority of students.

"Student Government's history certainly is exclusive rather than inclusive, and I think Orange and Blue really at its core will make Student Government respectable to the average student," he said.

McShera, a UF history junior, said he began his involvement with SG in fall of 2007.

As a senator, he helped increase representation for CLAS in the Student Senate and aided in crafting an Amendment 2 resolution and negotiations between parties, he said.

McShera said he expects online voting and responsible spending to be a big part of the Orange and Blue Party platform, which will be released in the coming weeks.

If he wins, one issue McShera said he intends to push for is switching UF's Webmail system to Gmail.

McShera says he expects to win and has distanced himself from past UF Student Body presidents.

"I think I am a lot more in touch with the average student," he said.
