Students caught breaking traffic laws while biking around campus might be able to skip out on a ticket in the future, if Student Senate has its way.

At their weekly meeting Tuesday night, senators unanimously approved a resolution stating that all bicyclists who violate traffic laws for the first time on UF's campus be given a bicycle safety brochure and a warning instead of a citation.

A resolution is a piece of legislation which presents an opinion but takes no action.

University Police Department Capt. Jeff Holcomb stopped by to speak with senators about the issue.

He said replacing citations with warnings poses a problem because any bicyclist in an accident must be issued a citation to document the event.

But Holcomb said he was not against the resolution.

"Officers try to avoid citations as much as possible," he said.

Later in the meeting, senators voted to fill an empty seat on Senate's Rules and Ethics Committee. The majority of senators voted for Gator Party Sen. Jason Cornman over Orange and Blue Party Sen. Travis Baker after about 20 minutes of debate.

However, Orange and Blue Party Sen. Jonathan Ossip took issue with Cornman's appointment given an unethical action the past, Ossip said.

Ossip referred to the instance last year when Cornman was found to represent a district in which he did not live. Cornman's name was cleared, however, since he had mail delivered to an address in the district, Ossip said.

"Is it possible to live in a mailbox?" he said.

Senate President Jordan Johnson said this was weak reasoning and did not factor into Cornman's current role or capabilities.
