The first round was for the first-year players.

The three freshmen of the No. 7 UF women's tennis team turned in quality performances in the opening round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Indoor Kickoff Weekend on Saturday.

Following an 8-1 romping of Oklahoma State in doubles, partners Jo Mather and Barbara Pinterova each crushed her singles opponent.

Jessica Alexander clinched the Gators victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Oklahoma State's Maryna Tkachenko.

"It's probably one of the rare things when our three freshmen win the matches for us," coach Roland Thornqvist said.

Mather attributed her success in both singles and doubles to consistency, while Pinterova said smart play was the key factor.

"She's been getting better, gaining more confidence, getting stronger," Thornqvist said of Pinterova. "She's really binding to what we're trying to do, and I think that's going to help her long-term."

After Thursday's longest set, the native of Slovakia finished a 6-1, 6-1 match in under an hour.

"It was a very good feeling," Pinterova said. "It was something new for me to have so many people around."

The Gators (3-0) will host Western Michigan at 2 p.m. Sunday at Linder Stadium.

"Western Michigan is more of a hitting team," Thornqvist said, comparing UF's opponent to South Alabama, whom the Broncos beat 4-3 on Saturday.
