Nearly 100 tickets and warnings were issued by the University Police Department on Wednesday as part of its second saturation detail, where the department increases the number of officers on campus and focuses on educating students about a specific law.

UPD will conduct a detail each Wednesday this semester, giving warnings to most first-time offenders, said UPD Lt. Stacy Ettel.

This week's focus was scooter helmets.

Of the 92 tickets and warnings issued, none were for failure to wear a helmet, while 61 warnings were given for other motorcycle and scooter violations, including not using headlights or wearing eye protection.

"Our goal here is education," Ettel said. "If we write a $104 ticket for no helmet then how do they afford a helmet?"

Last week's detail, which targeted skateboarders riding illegally in the street, saw 113 tickets and warnings.

Of those, 29 were warnings for skateboarding. No skateboarders were ticketed.

Ettel said about 60 percent more tickets are issued during saturation details compared to normal days.
