Fire rips through building, leaves one injured

A fire at The Laurels apartment complex Sunday night left five apartments damaged and one resident in the hospital with minor injuries.

An emergency call at 7:43 p.m. reported a dead body in a Dumpster near the back of the complex, said ACFR spokeswoman Carol Davis.

When police responded they found no body. But building AA of the complex was engulfed in flames.

Alachua County Fire Rescue Department and the Gainesville Fire Rescue Department were called to The Laurels, 4455 SW 34th St.

The fire was contained about an hour and a half after the rescue units arrived, she said.

A woman resident was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Although only one of the six apartments in the building was not destroyed, it will likely not be livable, Davis said.

The American Red Cross will help the displaced residents of building AA find places to stay for the night.

Davis said officials believe the fire started in one of the building's single bedroom end units. A fire inspector will examine the building Monday to determine the cause of the fire, Davis said.

As of Sunday night, no foul play was suspected, but due to the nature of the emergency call further investigation is probable, Davis said.
