UF president Bernie Machen is in Jacksonville this morning talking about ways to improve safety at the annual Florida-Georgia football game held in River City.

He will be meeting with Mayor John Peyton.

"We have some problems with the way things are done over there, crowd control outside of the stadium and things like that," Machen said last week at the University Athletic Association's board meeting.

The game is held at the ALLTEL Stadium sports complex.

Machen said he hoped the contract between UF and the city of Jacksonville could be extended by the end of the summer.

Two students have died in the city while attending the game in recent years, one in 2004 and one in 2005.

As a result, UF and Jacksonville have hosted safety zones-which offer things like first aid, water, snacks, coffee, phone service, universal cell phone chargers and directions-close to the stadium for the past three years.

UF officials have also expressed displeasure at the game's nickname, "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party."
