Thursday marked the beginning of Student Government elections when students with intentions of joining a student political party stopped by the Reitz Union.

The Unite Party attracted about 60 students. About 20 students committed to the Orange and Blue Party, and about 15 committed to the Progress Party.

Orange and Blue Party Sen. Ben Cavataro said candidates came into the interviews with varying ideas, including fixing the elevators in Beaty Towers and shortening the lines for free printing.

"A lot of the ideas are motivated by real student concerns, you know, what real people are feeling," Cavataro said.

Freshman Michael Morales said he's leaning toward the Orange and Blue Party.

"I definitely find that their policy of putting the students before themselves is something I can agree with," he said.

Dave Schneider, Progress Party president, said his party's goal this election season is to bring SG from its third-floor office to the students.

Sophomore Jeanna Lee said she was interested in the Progress Party because it embodies the idea that there is room for improvement in SG and encourages a diverse platform.

Unite Party spokesman Jason Yoepp said the party saw a great turnout, but he doesn't want students to be discouraged from stopping by today or Tuesday.

He said there are plenty of good students out there, and he doesn't want them to be intimidated or think they don't have a shot.

"There's good students leading everywhere," he said. "Not just Greek houses, not just the dorms."

Slating will continue today and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 284 of the Reitz Union.
