Jumpball: Gymnastics the sport to watch in the spring

Just because football season is over, doesn't mean your Gators clothes have to stay in your closet until next August.

There are still plenty of options for you to cheer on your beloved Florida, and it doesn’t stop at men’s basketball.

Most of the sports teams at UF are among the nation's best.

For me there is a clear-cut choice for which is the best to attend, and that’s gymnastics.

Sure the softball team is great and will likely be playing for a national championship again at the end of the season. The baseball team keeps getting better and has a top-10 team this year, and for the ladies, there is not much better than a baseball player. Lacrosse is interesting because it’s new and exciting. The other sports are just niche sports, and not many can stay interested in them.

The big problem with baseball and softball is they take way more dedication and time than anyone should be willing to spend on a small sport.

Baseball and softball have three games almost every weekend and more during the week. Also, it’s outside so you’re going to have to deal with the weather, and night games early in the season at McKethan Stadium are no fun. Trust me, I made the mistake of not wearing a sweatshirt to one and was out for the next few games sick.

Lacrosse might be new, but the team probably won’t be very good in its first season. And who wants to watch a losing team?

Gymnastics is in the O’Connell Center, so you never have to worry about the weather, and the meets are almost always Friday nights. Don’t worry, they are over by 9 p.m., so you can still go out.

The team is always one of the best in the nation, and this year is no different.

For the guys who say gymnastics is just for girls, they clearly have never been to a meet.

So instead of letting your Gators outfits collect dust, brush them off on Friday nights and head to the gymnastics meet.
