Gators volleyball enters this week with a seemingly impossible mission: defeating three ranked opponents in as many matches and winning four straight on the road.
In its first year of the Big 10/SEC Volleyball Challenge, Florida will compete in the Big 10/SEC Challenge as the No. 17-ranked team in the nation. The weeklong tournament, which features all 18 Big Ten schools and all 16 SEC institutions, makes history as the first time volleyball has been played at Wrigley Field.
Opening the challenging stretch is Florida's match against No. 11 Minnesota (1-1) at 9 p.m. Tuesday. With six losses in their nine meetings with the Golden Gophers, the Gators haven't always found their groove against Minnesota.
But Florida is looking to change that. It can rely on the strength of players like junior setter Taylor Parks. In the Gators’ last match against Stony Brook, Parks led the team with 16 assists and posted a career-high performance behind the service line, logging five aces. In her third campaign as a Gator, she has solidified herself as an offensive cornerstone at setter.
Parks will be crucial for Florida to match Minnesota’s biggest strength — its balance at the net. Stella Swenson is the Gophers’ primary distributor, while outside hitter McKenna Wucherer leads the attack. The powerhouse pin hitter paced Minnesota with 28 kills through the past two matches, making her the primary offensive threat the Gators will have to maintain Tuesday.
The Gophers have also proved they can score efficiently, recording a .298 hitting percentage in their last match against Creighton.
Florida is on the road for its most demanding stretch of the season, and the Gators will have to prove they can stay afloat against top teams. Florida already displayed resilience in its exhibition loss to No. 1 Nebraska on Thursday, where it managed to avoid a blowout by the Cornhuskers.
Ryan Theis and his squad will have just one day to rest, as they prepare to play No. 5 Wisconsin on Wednesday.
