Some of Alachua County’s youngest artists will have a chance to showcase their work at the upcoming Alachua County Elementary Art Exhibition beginning Saturday. Erin Friedberg, Gainesville visual arts coordinator, said the exhibition is designed to highlight the creativity and talent of its elementary school contributors.

A total of 87 pieces of artwork were chosen by 26 participating schools.

“It is just an extreme thrill for [the students] to be featured at the Thomas Center, like the highest art award that they could receive,” said Kristy Foster, Idylwild Elementary School art teacher.

The return of the event marks a highlight for Idylwild Elementary School, where cutbacks did not allow the school to participate last year, according to principal Barbara Henry.

The annual exhibition will be on display in the Thomas Center Mezzanine Gallery from Saturday to Jan. 31.
