Graduate student Kofi Adu-Brempong was shot in the head as he swung a metal rod at the police officers in his apartment, according to a police report filed Friday.

Adu-Brempong was advancing toward the five officers with a 24- to 30-inch-long rectangular metal rod when he was shot by UPD officer Keith Smith, the report said.

Just prior to the shooting, Adu-Brempong was sitting on the floor with the rod and a butcher knife, the report said. When commanded by the officers to drop his weapons, the 35-year-old Ghanan appeared to laugh and continued holding the knife and rod.

UPD officer William Sasser then shot a seated Adu-Brempong with a Taser, which had no affect.

As Adu-Brempong stood up and raised the rod over his head to strike UPD officer William Ledger, Smith shot him, the report said.

Adu-Brempong was then immediately taken to Shands at UF where he was treated for his injuries.
