It has been a few months since he came in last place in Gainesville’s mayoral election, but Ozzy Angulo is ready to give politics another try in the upcoming race for City Commission District 3.

While he has never held public office, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, worked as bartender and has been a manager at Taco Bell. Lack of political experience has never been a problem for us when it comes to local office. You have to start somewhere, right? That said, we still do not know what to think about this guy.

His political platform is rather simple – he wants to end the meal limits at homeless shelters, reverse the rising crime rate and tackle transportation problems in the city. We have no qualms with any of that. In fact he sounds like a dream candidate, but we have to wonder about a guy who lists his campaign headquarters as the Laboratory, a bar on University Avenue.

Maybe he is trying to attract the student vote by showing he still knows how to party, or maybe he got a special rate for booking the bar as a headquarters and venue for his election night party. Whatever the reason, it is a little weird.

We like rooting for the underdog, especially when they have had such dismal defeats as Angulo had in the mayoral election, but something seems a little bit off about this candidate. If nothing else, we are a little bit intrigued about his choice of headquarters.
