Students and alumni gathered on the Murphree Area courtyards Sunday to enjoy cotton candy, sausages, hot dogs, pies, a giant water slide and live performances.

The Murphree Area Council held its seventh annual SausageFest: The Cookout! to raise money for the Boys & Girls Club of Alachua County.

“It’s our biggest program of the year, and the reason we’re doing it is to carry on the tradition, to help build a community and to unite the past with the present,” said Gabriela Redondo, the president of the Murphree Area Council.

The event was free and open to the public.

Activity cards purchased by Murphree residents covered the cost of the event, and the slide, the “Blue Monster,” was paid for by Student Government.

Theatre Strike Force, UF’s improvisational comedy group, and the local band Munchees performed.

Dane Gullakson, a senior and residential assistant for Sledd Hall, volunteered to barbecue for the event and said he cooked about 300 sausages.

After taking five pies to the face, Luis Eduardo Bonilla Riveria, a residential assistant, was still enjoying the event.

“It tastes good and it’s for a good cause,” Bonilla Riveria said.
