Cornhole tournament raises money for Zimbabwe

Beanbags and sparks flew on the windy roof above Beef ‘O’ Brady’s at the Holiday Inn on Sunday afternoon.

A double-elimination cornhole tournament, organized by the MicroFinance Foundation, drew about 15 people to raise money for microloans for Zimbabwe. The group collected about $60 from the teams.

Six teams competed for more than an hour and a half. The members of the team Sam Bradford Doesn’t Have S--- On Us, Stephen Sawicki and Mark Trouville, placed first in the bracket after a winning streak.

Event co-organizer David Parsons said it is the goal of the MicroFinance Society to provide small loans to Zimbabwe, which has the lowest standard of living of any country, according to the UN Human Development Index.

“Even a few hundred dollars would help,” Parsons said.

Parsons and his teammate, Andrew Amend, placed second with their team, Table Athletic Guy.

Chapter President Bastian Bockenhuser, 25, is hoping to get the group a nonprofit status soon so it can begin taking private donations in addition to having fundraisers like the tournament.

The group is not an official club with UF’s Student Government because it cannot apply until May, Parsons said. Right now, they are part of the Warrington College of Business Administration.

The club is working on just getting money to Zimbabwe, and Parsons has learned something from the fundraiser: Sam Bradford clearly doesn’t have anything on them.
