County Commissioners discuss power and sewage

The County Commission debated about who really holds the power: the County Commission or the Gainesville Commission.

What the debate boiled down to is the City Commission made a request within a sewage system proposal to allow it to approve or disapprove projects, such as sewer system hookups, made in an unincorporated area.

That area is between Gainesville and Waldo, but neither city really controls it.

Some Commissioners are not pleased.

“What we’re doing is giving away our decision-making process or allowing someone else to make decisions for us, and I don’t think that’s appropriate,” said Commissioner Susan Baird. “It’s the City Commission that’s holding us hostage.”

Others are OK with letting the City Commission have a say.

“The more people who decide on an agreement, the better I feel,” said Commissioner Rodney Long.

The Commission may discuss and make a decision Tuesday. For more on this issue, see Wednesday’s Independent Florida Alligator.
