Safety requirements that have been mandated upon Student Government Productions for Flavet Field are currently underway.
The mandate, issued by the Vice President of Student Affairs, states that concerts cannot be held on Flavet until all necessary safety measures are in place.
Lt. Bill Gainey of the UPD Special Services Division said the Slightly Stoopid concert last March was the catalyst for these new regulations.
The new safety measures include building a fenced-off corridor that will separate the field into two halves and provide an access aisle for police officers.
According to Kyle Calhoun, chairman of SGP, Flavet construction should be completed by mid-February.
A hydraulic lift with a spotlight has been requested for nighttime concerts and low-level lighting will be installed throughout the field. The field will be completely fenced in so UPD can better control the area.
UPD suggests all bands who encourage moshing, crowd surfing or drug use not be invited to perform at UF.
The cost for these new regulations will be paid for by SGP. Calhoun said security costs for an event at Flavet were previously about $2,000. After the recent changes, security costs are about $4,500. These regulations probably won’t be enforced a year or two down the road, he said, so the higher costs are for the immediate future only.
According to Calhoun, university officials said they would prefer slowly easing into large events on the field.
Until then, the Bandshell remains unused.
