Weis, 2011 assistants signed for more than 2010 staff

To lure offensive coordinator Charlie Weis away from the NFL, Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley made him the highest paid assistant in school history.

Weis signed a three-year contract with a base salary of $2.49 million earlier this month, according to documents released by the University Athletic Association on Friday. He will take home an annual base salary of $765,000 this season before receiving an extra $100,000 for the next two seasons, assuming he stays with the Gators. Weis also received a $100,000 signing bonus.

In all, UF’s nine assistant coaches will make $2.9 million in base salary this season. That is a $275,000 increase over the salaries of last year’s assistants.

Florida more than made up for that financial difference with new coach Will Muschamp’s contract. Muschamp will reportedly make $2.7 million in base salary this season. Former coach Urban Meyer hauled in $4 million per year.

The second highest paid assistant will be defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who signed a two-year, $1 million contract. He will make $490,000 this year and $510,000 next year.

Weis and Quinn will make a combined $1.3 million this year. Florida’s previous coordinators, Steve Addazio and Teryl Austin, made a total of $815,000.

Offensive line and defensive line coaches Frank Verducci and Bryant Young are the only other assistants with multi-year contracts. They will annually bring in $290,000 and $230,000, respectively.

The other five assistants are signed to one-year deals, making an average of $230,000.

Running backs coach Brian White and linebackers coach/special teams coordinator D.J. Durkin are the only holdovers from Meyer’s staff. White will receive the same salary he did last year ($240,000) while Durkin was rewarded a $20,000 raise, bringing his salary to $260,000.

All coaches will receive the same $10,000 bonus from Nike that last year’s staff did.
