Opinion: Gainesville run-offs create now-or-never feeling

It didn’t hit me until Wednesday, but run-off season has officially begun.

I suppose I should just say that election season never ended, but run-offs seem to be a different breed than the March elections.

For one thing, there are four candidates in this run-off. During Tuesday’s election, there were 13.

But it’s mainly that sense of now-or-never that run-offs have that make them different.

With the March elections, at least candidates have the hope of a second chance. With run-offs, there are no more second chances. It’s only the April election, and then it’s over.

After all, Mayor Craig Lowe won in a run-off last year by 42 votes. That shows how close these things can come.

I expect candidates to campaign their hardest, and I also expect to be working pretty much non-stop to cover the final four in their home stretch.

Case in point: Forums start Monday.
