1,500 evacuated from Health Science Center after fire alarm pulled

Gainesville Fire Rescue, the Gainesville Police Department and the University Police Department responded to an electrical fire on the fifth floor of J. Hillis Miller Health Science Center early Wednesday afternoon.

After smelling and seeing smoke on the fifth floor of the facility, a maintenance man pulled the fire alarm, sending 1,500 Shands professionals, staff and volunteers onto Center Drive and SW 16th Street.

Gainesville Fire Rescue District Chief Rusty Barrett said there never was an actual fire inside the building, but a smoky haze covered the fifth floor after a medical freezer overheated.

Forty-five minutes later, firefighters determined the building was safe, and the evacuees filed back inside.

There were no injuries, and the building damage has not been accessed.
