In the wake of complaints from citizens that taxi companies were charging unfair rates, the Gainesville City Commission decided to require a Bill of Rights to be posted inside city taxi cabs.
Like the name states, the bill will list the rights that riders have. It is currently being developed.
A report by the city found that while none of the drivers were significantly overcharging, many of them didn’t hit their meters. This could mean they charged the riders more than the meter would have indicated.
These discussions have been going on since 2009, so this topic will more than likely make its way back to the Commission again.
