Another one bites the dust.
The
phrase is no longer just a John Deacon-penned rock lyric: It’s the
easiest way to explain the Gators football team since spring
practice ended.
On
Friday, tight end Michael McFarland became the sixth Florida
football player to transfer during the Will Muschamp era. His
decision came just one week after fellow redshirt freshman Chris
Martin decided to leave UF.
“Michael and I have come to the conclusion that it is in his best
interest to transfer from the University of Florida,” Muschamp said
in an official statement.
“We
wish him the best as he continues his career somewhere else.”
McFarland is from Tampa and played high school football at Blake
High. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound tight end was rated a three-star
prospect by Rivals.com out of high school and chose Florida over
Auburn, Boston College and South Carolina.
After enrolling at UF in January 2009, he dressed in only three
games of the 2010 season and never played a single down.
McFarland’s transfer means the Gators will only have two players
for the 2011 season who are listed as tight ends — one being former
quarterback Jordan Reed and the other true freshman A.C.
Leonard.
Sophomore linebacker Gerald Christian spent some time at tight end
during spring practice and enjoyed the transition.
Florida currently has one tight end oral commit for 2012 in
Pennsylvania four-star Colin Thompson. The Gators also have Land O’
Lakes standout Kent Taylor on their recruiting wish list.
McFarland could not be reached for comment, and his future plans
are unknown.
