Southwest Rec hosting event to promote student involvement

The UF RecSports staff is hosting an event to promote student involvement from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Southwest Recreation Center.

Staff will offer demonstrations of boot camp, fitness classes and small-group training classes. Intramural sports competitions, club expositions, chair massages and Lake Wauburg activities will also be showcased.

Event organizers expect at least 2,000 students to attend the RecSports Extravaganza, according to marketing coordinator Jessica Gates. The same number of students attended last year.

The event is good for new students who want to get involved and learn what RecSports has to offer, said Doug Burkhart, graduate assistant for intramural sports.

He said Extravaganza will be more of a social event than an athletic competition.

"It's more or less just sampling each thing, but there are a ton of people here for it," he said.
