9/11 memorial event to be held on Turlington Plaza

An event to help others will be held at Turlington Plaza Monday to remember the victims of 9/11.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., students can sign up to perform a good deed to help other people in the community. They will fill out a form documenting their choice and attach it to a picture of someone who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

This will be attached to a mini wooden replica of the twin towers and called the "twin towers of good deeds and love."

"The replica is used as a memorial wall and to encourage others to participate," said Rabbi Berl Goldman, executive director of the Lubavitch-Chabad Jewish Student Center at the University of Florida, which is sponsoring the event.

The event has been held for the past few years. Last year, over 900 people committed to performing good deeds.

The event is free and open to the public.

There will be a moment of silence at 12:45 p.m. to remember the victims of 9/11.

"We feel that this is turning darkness into light," Goldman said.
