In a game where the Gators volleyball team found a way to use all but one player on the roster, an overmatched Jacksonville squad was on the losing end of a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-6) sweep.
Florida opened its first of three games in this weekend’s Campus USA Credit Union Invite with a victory in which eight players recorded at least two kills. Jacksonville was held to a -.075 hitting percentage in comparison to .338 for UF, and the Gators also managed to out block the Dolphins nine to four.
Through it all, UF coach Mary Wise was still not happy with some of the team’s errors.
“We were very high-error and JU did a good job of taking advantage of it,” she said.
Senior Kelly Murphy led Florida with 15 assists while junior Betsy Smith had the team lead in kills with six. Nearly half of the players who took the court for the Gators recorded a hitting percentage of .364 or better.
“There will be areas where the players won’t enjoy watching the video, but there were moments of improvement and that’s key,” Wise said.
Florida’s 25-6 victory in the match-clinching third set was a brief sign of improvement for its coach.
“In the third set, we eliminated some of those unforced errors and got into a better rhythm,” Wise said. “Taylor passed very well, but nothing spectacular in terms of performance today.”
In their first and only doubleheader of the season, Florida will take on Florida Atlantic tonight at 7:30 p.m.
