Sustainability is everywhere. It's in our lives, our construction and in nature — such as the stone crab, which is a very sustainable creature.
The Florida stone crab is a delicacy eaten in many restaurants. Its claws are large and meaty, making them a treat.
But, the crab is not killed for its meat. Rather, fishermen have discovered that the crab is a sustainable organism because a live crab can actually grow its claws back.
Fishermen will remove one claw from the crab and then release it back into the ocean. Over the next year, the crab will grow its claw back. In the next fishing season, the crab can be caught again, and the process can be repeated.
This makes the fishing process of the stone crab sustainable because the crab population is not decreasing. The crabs are not being killed, and the fishing process can last indefinitely.
