Two campus Starbucks locations charged for water cups

Alexandra Kramer ordered a skinny vanilla latte, a slice of lemon loaf and a cup of water at the Starbucks in Library West on Monday.

To her surprise, Kramer, a 20-year-old public relations junior, was charged 45 cents for the cup of water. She hadn't been charged for water before.

A Starbucks employee told her the charge was recently implemented because the cups used were not recyclable, Kramer said.

The Starbucks at the Hub also charged for water this week.

Jill Rodriguez, the marketing program manager for Gator Dining Services, wrote in an email, "A mistake was made at the Hub when charging the customer for water, and we have since corrected this."

Rodriguez declined to say who made the mistake or for how long customers had been charged for water.

She also would not say if any other campus locations aside from Library West and the Hub had charged for water.

Kramer, however, said she was glad Starbucks on campus eliminated the charge.

"Starbucks is already pricey," Kramer said. "I'm sure they were receiving a lot of complaints from students."
