Yvonne Hinson-Rawls won the race for the Gainesville City Commission District 1 seat Tuesday night.

Hinson-Rawls earned 1,126 votes - 54.29 percent of the vote.

Her opponent Ray Washington earned 479 votes at 23.1 percent. Armando Grundy earned 469 votes at 22.61 percent.

Hinson-Rawls, a 64-year-old retired educator, ran on a platform of job creation and education. After retiring, Hinson-Rawls started her own company, Childstart Learning Solutions. The business provided tutoring for students in low-performing schools in Louisiana, Georgia and Florida, including Alachua County.
