Florida Museum of Natural History showcases variety of collections

Visitors to the Florida Museum of Natural History can view historical memorabilia collections on Saturday at a free museum event.

The 33rd Collectors Day will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. With about 85 private collections on display, as well as collections from groups and organizations, visitors can view "anything and everything," said Tiffany Ireland, an education assistant at the Florida Museum of Natural History.

"We have things as basic as business cards to as extravagant as military uniforms," said Ireland, who is coordinating the event.

She said she expects about 3,000 visitors, a larger crowd than the average 2,500 visitors in the past.

With 2012 marking the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking, the Titanic collection is a must-see this year.

Visitors can view new collections as well as their favorites from past Collectors Day events.

This year will be Miriam Welly Elliott's 28th year participating in the event. She collects Beatles memorabilia such as gum, cards, buttons and jewelry.

"I really enjoy sharing it with others," Elliott said. "It reinforces to me how timeless they and their music are."

Ireland said human body remnants and anything to do with archaeological sites are prohibited from being displayed.
