Three people injured in a car crash at the intersection of University Avenue and Southwest 34th Street late Sunday afternoon are recovering.
Riley Sullivan, 20, is in stable condition after undergoing surgery at Shands at UF, said Cpl. Angelina Valuri, Gainesville police spokeswoman. Sullivan has a spinal fracture.
Barry Guertin, 49, and Caline McDermott, 32, were taken to North Florida Regional Medical Center after suffering minor injuries in the crash. A GPD press release Sunday afternoon incorrectly stated that four people were injured in the crash.
Around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sullivan, driving a silver Kia Optima, sped north on Southwest 34th Street toward cars parked in both lefthand turn lanes. The Optima hit the left-rear side of a green Mitsubishi Eclipse and the driver's side of a silver Chevy Cobalt, according to Gainesville police.
The Optima continued moving forward, slamming into the back of a white Honda Odyssey. The Optima flipped and came to a stop at the end of the median on Southwest 34th Street. The momentum of the crash pushed the Odyssey across the intersection. The van came to a stop in front of Chevron north of University Avenue.
Alachua County Fire Rescue drove Sullivan to Shands at UF with life-threatening injuries, according to Gainesville police. Gainesville Fire Rescue drove McDermott to North Florida Medical, and a family member took Guertin.
