Visitation, memorial to be held for former Alachua County Sheriff Joe Crevasse

Visitation for a former Alachua County sheriff will be held Wednesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Williams Thomas West funeral home.

Joe Crevasse, 96, died Monday night, according to a Sheriff's Office statement. Crevasse was UPD's first police chief, serving from 1947-55. He then became the sheriff, holding office for 21 years until 1976.

The Williams Thomas West funeral home is located at 823 NW 143rd St., about 12 miles west of the UF campus.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, located at 419 NE First St.

The Sheriff's Office administration building was dedicated to Crevasse on April 26.
