This week marks the beginning of spring and all its pollen, allergies and random afternoon thunderstorms.

Spring is nature’s way of screwing with us.

Luckily, with advances in modern medicine and science, we can all give a big middle finger to Mother Nature and get on with our lives, which brings us to this week’s if-you-haven’t-gotten-sick-yet-this-semester-you-probably-will edition of...

Darts & Laurels

This week, we’ll start off by throwing a few darts and end with some more pleasant laurel-giving.

First, we throw a contrary-to-any-implication-I-didn’t-do-it-I-counseled-Jason-not-to-do-it-he-agreed-I-thought-I-acted-very-responsibly DART at the 56 senators in Student Government who voted to approve Katie Waldman for chairwoman of the allocations committee.

Apparently, repeating the same phrase over and over is enough to convince people that unethical actions are suddenly acceptable.

Next, we toss a there’s-a-difference-between-what-is-ethical-and-what-is-legal DART to former Unite Party spokeswoman Christina Bonarrigo.

After Tuesday’s senate meeting, Bonarrigo told the Alligator there was nothing wrong with Waldman remaining silent about Tiemeier throwing away newspapers.

Of course, it’s not illegal to refrain from reporting a crime.

However, saying that it’s ethical to withhold information shows her completely distorted worldview.

During the whole fiasco, Bonarrigo told the Student Press Law Center that the Alligator fabricated the story about Tiemeier throwing away newspapers.

One would think that Waldman, the vice chairwoman of the Rules and Ethics Committee, would be the first to bring forth information about the incident if she knew who was involved.

Instead, Waldman remained silent. How is that not unethical?

For some good news, we give a make-it-stop LAUREL to the Florida Board of Governors committee that rejected a proposed undergraduate enhancement fee that would have added 5 percent to the total cost of undergraduate tuition.

Although this fee might have been blocked, it does not mean that the cost of attendance will not increase. Keep your eyes peeled for more news about this issue.

We also would like to give a good-luck-in-the-Big-Apple LAUREL to Tim Tebow, who will likely be playing for the New York Jets next season. We know many Gators fans were hoping he would come back to Florida, but don’t be surprised to see more Jets jerseys around Gainesville.

Have a fun and safe weekend, and be sure to check back next week.
