Duo surveys University of Florida students to find out what they listen to on campus

Headphones are almost as common as backpacks on campus, and two UF students decided to listen in.

Roommates Dalton Verhagen and Rehan Khan wanted to hear what students listen to on campus, so they stuck a camera in students’ faces and asked what artist and song they were listening to.

They made a “What Are You Listening to, UF?” video and posted it on YouTube.

The idea, based on Tyler Cullen’s New York City video, has reached London, Singapore and a few US cities and campuses.

As of Sunday, the UF video posted March 19 had about 240 hits on YouTube.

Khan, a 22-year-old microbiology cell science senior, and Verhagen said they thought UF’s music selection could be even more interesting.

When Khan and Verhagen filmed the video in mid-February, they got an array of responses, such as the Osborne Brothers, Bon Iver, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole and a Harry Potter audio book.

“As UF students, we see all these people with headphones walking to class,” said Verhagen, an 18-year old computer engineering freshman. “I’ve always been curious to see what different people listen to.”
