A Santa Fe College student is in critical condition after crashing his motorcycle into a ditch Thursday morning.

Joseph M. Valderrama, 23, lost control and steered his bike into a palm tree at 1810 NW 23rd Blvd., Gainesville Police said. Officers don’t know when the crash happened, but someone found Valderrama in a nearby ditch around 7 a.m.

Valderrama wore a helmet but still suffered head trauma, GPD spokeswoman Cpl. Angelina Valuri said. Paramedics drove him to Shands at UF, where he remained Thursday afternoon.

Northwest 23rd Boulevard was closed for several hours Thursday morning. Valuri said she didn’t know when it reopened.
