The Student Senate will hear a new resolution Tuesday that is similar to the resolution pulled from the Senate floor last week.

The bill asks UF administration to halt the removal of independently owned newspaper racks.

Bill author Sen. Umair Asghar pulled the resolution from the Senate floor last week because he did not do enough research. He re-wrote and re-submitted the bill.

UF wants to replace independently owned newspaper racks with black, university-owned modular ones.

In 2009, administrators proposed to UF’s Board of Trustees a rule that would prohibit distribution of all publications on campus unless approved by UF.

The new resolution asks UF administration to halt the removal until after retired economics professor David Denslow can complete an impact study to determine the possible effects of removing the newspaper racks.

The bill also asks the UF Board of Trustees to repeal or revise its 2009 ruling.

“I’m hoping to get some more information from Dr. Denslow’s study,” Asghar said when he was presenting the bill to the Judiciary Committee on Sunday.

The bill was passed favorably.

The first bill regarding this subject was passed unfavorably by the judiciary committee before the July 24 Student Senate meeting.

Members of the committee had problems with the resolution only naming the Alligator.

Asghar said the reason this bill only mentioned the Alligator was because if the Alligator went, other news publications would go with it.
