After you’ve been out for the night with your friends, Five Star Pizza just seems to call your name.

Eating cures boredom, but eating late at night is one of the worst things you can do to your body.

Weight loss is total calories consumed compared to amount of energy burned, said Dr. Donald Hensrud, associate professor of preventative medicine and nutrition at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., as interviewed by ABC News. Late-night snacking increases calorie intake, making the sides unbalanced.

Despite the setback in weight loss, there are ways to get around it. Resist dialing Midnight Cookies when you’re up late studying, and try some of these healthier alternatives to keep off the extra pounds:

Frozen blueberries, raspberries or strawberries — They are filled with antioxidants that can help you feel more energized.

Multigrain pretzels or crackers — About a handful (one ounce) is a great alternative to chips and is about 100 calories.

Cheese quesadilla — Use low-fat cheese and a high-fiber tortilla with no meat (meat takes longer for the body to break down).

Greek yogurt — It is high in protein, low in sugar and it’s filling. If one serving doesn’t fill you up, add some fruit.

Dark chocolate — The darker, the better. Dark chocolate contains more cacao and less processed fat.

Avocado — It contains plenty of fiber, which helps it pass through your system quickly.

Green tea — It isn’t exactly food, but it’ll help you get your mind off how hungry you are and fill you up with plenty of nutrients.
