Gainesville Police are investigating a Thursday night shooting that left one man dead and the suspect still at large.

Police identified Eugene Shelton, a 26-year-old Santa Fe College student, as the victim of the shooting.

At 8:26 p.m. Thursday, GPD received a call about shots being fired in the Rocky Point Apartments at 3100 SW 35th Place.

A woman reported she heard a gunshot and saw a man wearing a white T-shirt fleeing northwest into a wooded area, according to a GPD press release.

The witness also told police she saw another man getting into a car and speeding away.

As police searched the complex, officers received a call from Shands at UF about a man who entered the emergency room with a gunshot wound to his chest.

According to the press release, a friend drove Shelton to the hospital, where he went into surgery.

At 2:50 a.m. Friday, Shelton was pronounced dead.

GPD detectives believed Shelton initially went to the apartments to participate in a drug deal.

Police continued to search for the shooter Friday but were unable to make an arrest.
