If there’s two things I’m sick of hearing about, it’s Chris Brown’s continued existence and the women’s reproductive rights debate. Frankly, I’m just too busy to worry what goes on with my vagina, and I’m a little insulted that some politicians assume that women are obsessed with reproductive rights. If they even took two seconds to open an issue of Glamour, they’d know we care about a wide range of things, like Fall’s Nine Hottest Nail Polish Colors and Three Totally Chic Ways to Wear a Cape.
In an interview with Wolf Blitzer at the Republican National Convention, Pam Bondi, Florida attorney general, said it best.
“What women care about are jobs, the economy, the unemployment rate,” she said. She also said that in her travels across the country on Romney’s behalf, the issue of his “personhood”-style amendment that would define life at the moment of conception “has not come up.”
Can we get a standing ovation for Pam Bondi? This gal knows what’s up — women do not care about reproductive health. As the poster woman for feminism Gloria Steinem said, “A woman needs birth control like a fish needs a bicycle.”
"Wolf, when I’m around the country,” Bondi also said, “women care about the same issues as men, and that’s getting jobs, keeping jobs."
My girl Bondi needs to call up some Democrats and share her experience with them. According to an article on “The Raw Story,” at a Planned Parenthood Federation of America rally before the Democratic National Convention, Newark Mayor Cory Booker had a few choice words about the GOP’s stance on ladies and their private parts.
“I heard people stand up and say, ‘I love women.’ I heard people say, ‘I’ve got a sister, I’ve got a mother,’” he said. “That’s like saying you’re not a bigot because you have a black friend. That’s like saying, ‘I love Latinos, I go to Taco Bell every week.’”
He then said, “I don’t understand how somebody can say they love women when they are denying women access to health care, when they are denying women strategies to protect their life, when they are implementing policies that undermine all the ground that we have gained, not as just women, but as this nation.”
Can you believe this guy? The fact is, we modern women have many other far more important things on our collective plate than worrying about whether one party wants to cut Planned Parenthood or one party wants to make birth control more affordable by including it in universal healthcare coverage. We care about business! We care about special yogurt that helps us poop! We care about foreign policy! We care about how long KimYe is going to last! With all that in addition to worrying about school, our jobs, the staggering economy, our families and boyfriends and girlfriends — who has time for reproductive health?
