Freshmen firsts: New year, new experiences

Freshmen year is the best opportunity to try new things. I came here with the goal of trying something new as often as I could. I was amazed at the wide array of events that were open to me.

Whenever I have the opportunity to do something different, I usually have the mantra, “Try it, you’re in college now!” So far, I have tried rock climbing, kayaking, yoga, joining a bible study, eating tofu and ordering food at 2 a.m. I have to say, intriguing to think I may try something new every week. Even if it’s something small like trying new food in the dining hall, I am still having a new experience.

Karen Lara, an accounting freshman, agreed, “Now that I am on my own and away from my parents I feel like I can try so many new things. I went to Hillel for Shabbat services. It was very different than the usual Christian church I went to at home. Trying something so new really opened my eyes to other ways of life.”

I, myself, am also opening my eyes to a new way of life. I joined a campus ministry, The Navigators, with the goal of learning more about how I want to live my life. Through them I have joined a bible study and I am learning more than I ever thought I would.

I have also tried new ways to exercise. I tried Zumba, Turbo Kick, and Vinyasa yoga at the gym. I also went kayaking at Lake Wauberg. I loved the feeling of being able to do something so different at whatever time I wanted.

Lara also tried Zumba. “I was trying to find a way to combat the freshman fifteen. I also went to my first concert. I went to the Miguel concert that the Hispanic Student Association had in honor of Hispanic Heritage month. It was an amazing experience; I was front row at my first concert!”

The wonderful thing is that most of these new activities I’ve tried have been through the school. I enjoy having a wide variety of fun pass times open to me that are provided at no or reduced cost. I know that on any given weekend I can attend a gym class, go to a concert or event sponsored by the school, or even try a new dish at Broward dining.
