Baby, it’s cold outside. Before you start bundling up, make sure to read this quick lesson on how to become smarter and more fashionable in terms of layering your clothing.

There are fewer balances harder to achieve than the balance between staying warm and beginning to look like an Eskimo.

Start with a simple camisole or tank top. I like my J. Crew one personally because it is so incredibly comfortable.

Next, add a simple silky top to dress up your outfit. Try a button up blouse or something with a collar that will stick out from underneath your sweater, which leads me to my next step.

Depending on how cold it is, add a pullover sweater. Though you’ll look similar to a schoolgirl, I have come to the conclusion that there are few other ways to remain fashionable without simultaneous suffering from frostbite. My favorite pullover is from Ann Taylor LOFT, which always has a great collection of snuggly clothing.

Finally, add that final touch of your favorite pea coat or jacket. I only whip out my trench coat on special occasions but that is an option as well. Slip your arms into that warm coat and you’re ready to attack your day. Except, well, you also need pants.

Jeans will pair with this look ten times out of ten. However, I’ve become more and more inclined to wear my black skinny jeans during the winter months. They give you the legging-look but also have a much thicker texture that will keep you warm even on the coldest North Florida days. For really cold days add a pair of leggings underneath your jeans. Sometimes, I can manage to stuff full-on yoga pants underneath my jeans.

Then, put on your fuzziest socks, zip up your riding boots, slap on a smile and start to smirk at all of the people who are freezing this month because you are now the Queen of Layering.
