Who would win in an epic duel: Harry Potter or Luke Skywalker?

UF’s Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication will be hosting a charity public debate, "Luke Skywalker vs. Harry Potter," at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Matherly Hall, Room 0016.

The debate supports Food4Kids Backpack Program, a nonprofit organization that feeds chronically hungry children in Alachua County by providing them with food for the weekends and during extended breaks.

One out of four children in North Florida are affected by poverty and hunger, according to the organization’s website.

“We are hoping this initiative will raise community awareness about hunger issues in the local area,” said Jennifer Moore, founder and CEO of the Food4Kids Backpack Program.

In order to combat these statistics and to further the mission of the organization, audience members are asked to bring three cans of food.

“Our organization strives to inspire people to get involved and help make a difference by working together,” Moore said.

The audience is encouraged to participate further by acting as a jury during the event to determine which hero wins the duel.

“We thought it would be great to ask our audience to donate to continue supporting this organization we have partnered with in the past,” said 19-year-old UF chemical engineering sophomore Harris Krause, who serves as a member of the UF speech and debate team.

Krause will be called to the stand to testify as Harry Potter. Other members of the speech and debate team will be testifying. Darth Vader and Hermione Granger are also planning to make appearances.
