Supervisor of Elections office to consolidate

The Alachua County Supervisor of Elections will handle all its election operations under one roof if it moves to a new office later this year.

The office, which has three locations throughout Gainesville, will consolidate into one space, said Supervisor of Elections Pam Carpenter.

The deadline for the move is Dec. 1, just in time for the 2014 city elections, Carpenter said.

So far, six proposals have been submitted. The 5440 Group LLC submitted a suggestion for a building on Northwest 13th Street. Saul Silber Properties LLC recommended moving into the old Sticks ‘N’ Stuff building at the corner of Northwest 13th Street and Northwest 23rd Avenue.

The new location would provide extra space for new voting equipment required by Florida law for the 2016 election. Residents will vote on touch-screen machines that will print out paper ballots, Carpenter said.

Alachua County Purchasing Manager Larry Sapp said the county is looking for a building that is at least 40,000 square feet, close to bus routes and has enough parking space.

The new location could also offer additional space for other county departments.
