Televisionistas: “Girls,” Jessa

Once undergrad is done, the next step in the natural progression of life would be to move to New York with some friends, right? We’ve been enchanted for so long by television shows about life in the city. From Brooklyn hipsters to the wealthy Upper Eastside kids, shows like “Sex and the City,” “Gossip Girl” and “The City” have given us an unrealistic slice of life portrayal. And clothing is no exception in this, in fact, it makes up so much of the wow factor with these programs.

Cue the HBO series, “Girls.” We’ve finally been given a taste of what it could be like when things don’t end happily ever after post grad. Hannah, Jessa, Shoshanna and Marnie have been the group to take us through the struggles of life in New York. They don’t wear designer threads because they cannot afford them. When rent is sometimes an issue, trying to swindle the latest Michael Kors accessory isn’t much of an option. This reality is reflected strongly in the wardrobe of these characters, with the exception of Marnie since she’s the most well-off in the series.

At times, the wardrobes of these characters are so true to their television personalities I’m tempted to give them a little make-over. Then, I step back and realize that it’s not all about the glamour. The clothes reflect their lives and this whole big adventure that they’re embarking on, but I’m most intrigued by Jessa Johansson.

Jessa

Boho chic is what she is. Not everyone can pull off this effortless look. If you know that you’re a put together person when it comes to your style choices, don’t bother. Jessa’s clothes are extremely reflective of her many travels and adventures. She’s not one to go around buying basics when she has so many little eclectic pieces. Loose fitting items that flow are your friend and so is a little thrifting. Finds things out of the ordinary and make them fit.

However, don’t go too overboard with trying to capture that bohemian or modern gypsy look. Looking exotic, or eastern is acceptable, but one can easily cross that line and go from boho chic to hobo chic. The key to this look is moderation. Don’t over layer, and pair something that flows with a form fitting items. But this look is playful and carefree, so have fun. Don’t be afraid to mix and match prints and textures. It’s OK to be a little rough around the edges.
