I remember the day I packed up my room for the big move to Gainesville. I stood for a moment surveying my room, only just realizing that somehow I would have to fit the contents of my room into two cars and then fit it into half of a dorm room. Now it’s time to pack up my dorm room and move it all back. I’m just thankful I don’t have to move everything to another state. My friend Karen has to lug all of her things back to New Jersey; needless to say UPS will be helping her transport the bulkier luggage.

Obviously, boxes are the go-to for packing up. But I utilize suitcases. The last time I went home for the weekend I brought back a bunch of big suitcases to pack up everything in my room that will easily be tucked into a suitcase. Roll your clothes; don’t worry they won’t wrinkle and you’ll have so much more room to fit more things in the suitcase or box. Don’t try putting hangers in suitcases; they take up way too much room. Put those in a garbage bag.

Garbage bags, otherwise known as an “Alabama suitcase”, are your friend. You can pack hangers, shoes, oddly-shaped items and more into them. You can even wrap bulletin boards and the like in them if you don’t want to unpin everything on it and pack it up.

Load your laundry basket or bag up to the brim. Put things in there you may not feel comfortable bagging, like lamps or bedding. Wrap mugs and other dishes in newspaper or plastic shopping bags to protect them from breaking.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry too much about what everything is packed in. All it has to do is make it to the car. But if you feel like everything needs to be transported in absolute safety, scrounge up as many boxes as you can find. Start now because everyone will be looking for them.

Start packing early if you can. You can box or bag up the little things that you don’t use every day. Defrost your fridge before the day you move out. Don’t forget to go through your room and check for holes in the wall or other damages that may get you a nice little charge.

Moving day is going to be just plain weird. It’ll be exciting to go home again, you’ll be sad to leave your friends for the summer and you’ll be stressed because moving days are just plain stressful. Just be prepared and have a game plan and it should go smoothly.
