Taking control of your summer

Like many college students you are probably ending school and headed straight to the beach. Tanning it up with a margarita in hand is definitely something that I could get into. Sadly, I will be interning five days a week. On my weekends off I will be attempting to break away from the cliché beach summer and create some new adventures.

I love to get outdoors, but I don’t just want to lie on a towel and get sunburned. In many areas canoeing and kayaking are available. Check out your closest state park and look into some water sports. If you live anywhere near a white water rafting area, go! River rafting tends be available only near northern Florida and Georgia (like the Chattooga River) so try and take a full weekend road trip and go on adventuring.

I would say that the easiest way to take control of your summer is to break out that bucket list you created last summer. If you have always wanted to take a pottery class and make a vase – now is your chance. Community centers and community colleges often offer weekend classes like pottery or art classes. Personally, I have always wanted to learn how to learn how to waltz and now is the time.

If your bucket list has things like skydiving or base jumping, get on it! We won’t live forever, summer is the time to embrace your wild side and do everything and go everywhere you have always wanted.

Check out my my last two posts: Wacky world’s largest attractions and Surf’s up. Both posts could offer some new experiences. Go on a road trip and find some attractions in your area or check out one of the hot local surfing spots and watch some surfer boys rip the waves. These could make for some interesting afternoons.

This might sound a little crazy, but have you ever wanted to gamble? Collect some quarters, pennies and tips from your day job and hit up some Native American casinos, like the Miccosukee casino in Miami. You could casino hop and make a weekend road trip out of it. Make sure you set a limit for yourself, such as $50 and if you go under a certain amount get out of there and hit up the beach instead, it can be a lot cheaper.

Another idea would be to get your friends together and make a map of your hometown with all the thrift shops marked on it. Play "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore and go thrift shop hopping. Get sweet new threads on a budget.

Don’t be lazy this summer – get out there and try something new!
